First Tool in 5 Best System Optimization solutions series is Windows. To keep running Windows smoothly, it itself contains all tools which are hidden and scattered all over. Windows Xp users gets most virus and trojan attacks as it has been there for 10 years ( That's lot of time for virus programmers). Even Windows 7 gets viruses and gets slow with time and user actions overtime but switching to Windows 7 will make your PC far more secure and faster. But that's not possible for old low-end systems, or some of you still might want to stick with XP.
So if you are facing lagging issues and slow responses of applications, the first step would be to scan with updated Antivirus.
There are many free AV are available to go with. This would take time so just let it run in the background. In the meantime open your Task manager and look for any unwanted processes that might be hogging up your resources, making your PC slow. If you are having low Memory than it would be advisable to terminate any unwanted processes running in background. Many people leave there Instant Messaging Software running in background even when they are logged out. I would recommend Game Booster from Iobit. This little software is for Gamers but what it does is that it stop all background and unnecessary services to release some memory. Now this wont make a difference on Systems with Quad-core CPU and 4 GB Ram but it certainly would be a life saver for low-end systems.
Now if you have enough ram and cpu free, still your Pc is lagging than it might be because of some other reasons.
So second step would be to check if all system files are intact and not altered.
To do this go to Start menu and open RUN or press Windows+R. Write CMD in the Run window and press Enter. (Note: You must have admin privileges to run this).
Command Prompt will open.
Type SFC /SCANNOW and press Enter. Now don't run this if you have pirated copy of windows because this would replace all system files with original files leaving your Windows messy and maybe unoperational. This will not affect your personal files.
This would repair all Windows components. Now Third step is defrag your Hard disk. This is simple.
