Is Your Password Strong Enough?

How strong is your password? How long you think it would take to hack your password? Time is gone when the passwords used to take weeks or even years to crack, based on the processing power of a modern desktop PC, passwords now are crackable in days or even hours. That’s a big security issue considering that many computer users are still selecting weak passwords as their account passwords.

Creating strong passwords for all your online accounts is not a thing you should do. It is a thing you must do. Services that test a password strength can help users in evaluating their passwords. Will it take days, years or even longer to crack a selected password? That’s what How Secure Is My Password will tell you.

Just head over to the service’s website and enter a password in the form. You do not necessarily have to enter a password that you use actively. You can alternatively enter a comparable password to find out how long it would take to hack your password. You can have fun trying different combinations and see how much time it would take to crack them.Website even shows suggestions to make your password strong. Or you can try their sister site: Make Me A Password

What makes a strong password?

I shall not elaborate on this since many sites have already discussed this in great detail. In a nutshell, a strong password must constitute the following:
  • It needs to contain special characters such as @#$%^&
  • It must be at least 8 characters long.
  • It must not have any common words such as 123, password, your birth date, your login name and any words that can be found in the dictionary.
  • a variation of capitalization and small letters
In my opinion, even if your password consists of the above, it is still not enough. Your password needs to be totally unique and different for each and every one of your online accounts. This is to make sure that in the event that one account is hacked into, your other accounts will not be affected.
